I do not have any car insurance right now. I am planning to get a car rental for a month. Do I need to get some insurance for this? What happens if cop pulls me up will rental agreement be sufficient?

-he has Statefarm insurance. (not sure full coverage or not)
-he will rent a compact car from a rental company
-he will sign/pay for the car
so what COULD happen if the dad gets in an accident? (thinking of the worst case scenario)
will his insurance rates go up?
will he have to go through a huge painful process (compared to being in an accident with his own car)?
if you have any other recommendations please advise me
but PLEASEE tell me what could happen
no “check with your insurance company”, “ask the rental company” i have asked… the will not give me a full answer!

I want enough coverage for the car and for myself so that I can walk away hassle-free in the worst-case scenario. I would also consider coverage for my belongings left inside the vehicle.
In the case that all of these are required/strongly advised, what would be a reasonable per diem rate for each? Are there any outside companies that provide rental car insurance?
Also, the car was rented with a (bank) Mastercard. What policies do they typically offer, and/or what questions/wording should I use when calling to ask? Thanks.
