My husband and I need to drive from Delaware to Alabama this spring. He’s 24 and has a class C CDL. We were just checking out car rental rates and all companies will charge us a $25 per day surcharge just to rent a compact car! This is absolutely ridiculous! Its going to double the cost of renting the car. Is there any way to get around these things?

Several years ago my husband and I bought a new van and traded in the old car. At the financial part, we were told our credit was excellent. BUT the most we’d ever borrowed was a small amount (9,000), so we had to pay a higher interest rate. Our van was around 18,000. So now we are moving and hoping to buy a house after our move. Will the same frustration happen with a house mortgage? We’ve tried really hard to build and keep excellent credit. It makes me sick to know we could be penalized yet again. So what do you think? Should the morgage interest rate reflect our good credit or will we get a lower rating yet again because we’ve not borrowed thousands upon thousands of dollars (looking to buy a house that is 90k-130k).

I’m thinking of buying a rental vehicle. Are there things that rental companies do to their cars to reduce the factory-set speed and pick-up?

My vehicle was totaled in an accident. The other party is at fault, the police reports have been submitted, and the insurance company has provided a rental vehicle for wednesday thru monday. One adjusters told me that it is an AR state law that insurance companies can only provide a rental vehicle for 3 business days… but another insurance adjuster, my finance company, and my insurance company told me that was false. Who is telling the truth???

The other vehicle was at fault. The driver, does not own the vehicle, but lives with the owner. Their insurance co. will not pay any money or even set me up with a rental until they contact the owner. It has been over a month now, and he has not answered their phone call. I have no idea why he’s hiding. Possibly warrants out for his arrest, who knows. He has coverage, so he has no reason to hide. The driver stopped answering phone calls as well. The police report states clearly that the other driver was at fault. The other insurance company doesn’t seem to care, but I don’t have a vehicle, am out $400 for a rental that I had to pay myself, and I’m missing work. How long should I wait before I take this to court?….or is there a better route to take? I’ve filed a complaint with the department of insurance, but even that hasn’t mad the other ins. company speed up the process. Should I maybe take the owner to small claims court?

I would like to know if this is normal business practice or a rip off. I booked a car through expedia for 5 days for 120 dollars. At Phoenix airport the clerk said I had to buy insurance at 50 dollars per day. I said that my insurance covered me to drive a rental car and he said ‘well we don’t know that, all policies are different’ but that he could perhaps cancel ’some’ of the 50 dollar a day insurance. He ended up saying that the best he could do for me would be 440 including taxes and insurance (I had expected to pay 120 plus tax). Then, when I returned the rental car the tank was half empty and they said they would fill it up and charge my credit card at the rate of 6.67 a gallon! How can they justify this? You don’t have time to argue when you have a plane to catch. Shouldn’t they tell you in advance that if you don’t bring it back full they will charge you 6.67 a gallon? This was my first time renting a car so I want to know if this is normal or if I’ve been scammed.
and I didn’t even mention that the car was a piece of C . . . .
and it was a name brand company, it was Dollar
