I am renting a car for 5 days. I’m not sure if my own personal car insurance covers for a rental, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. Its almost $100 for the insurance that they offer! Seems like a trap. Is it absolutely necessary to purchase it? Thanks

My son was 800 miles away from home in Louisiana when he was involved in an accident that totalled his ‘93 Ford Ranger. (He was there to start a good paying job, and was on his way to the job site for testing to begin his first day of work!) He has returned home in a rental vehicle, but doesn’t understand the process of what happens next. He is going to his own doctor tomorrow to determine if he’s injured as badly as he thinks he is… the ER where the accident happened released him with no injuries, but he’s still in a great deal of pain. What do we need to do now???
(The wreck was not his fault, he was hit from behind, which caused him to hit the car in front of him, which hit the car in front of it… and the driver causing the accident was fully insured with Allstate)

This would increase consumer spending and tourism.

Airlines and rental car companies can offer discount coupons on certain gasoline stations only. Therefore tourists to exercise the coupons would have to travel to the locations where those gasoline stations are located. Otherwise, the coupons expire and it’s profit split between the gasoline station and the rental car company. It’s a money-maker.

If the tourist takes advantage of the coupons, then those towns near those gas stations will profit from anything those tourists buy in those towns.

This scheme can be used to help a lot of towns in the Midwest. It would be like you rent a car in Cleveland. The Alamo Rental car in Cleveland includes a free coupon if you meet certain timeframes. The coupon value is 50% off any BP gas station in Akron.

Now you can save money on a trip to Akron and if you don’t, you end up paying a barely noticeable fee split between Akron’s BP gas station and Alamo. And they’d make money.

If you buy gas in Akron, the town of Akron may see an increase in consumer spending, so it becomes a win win.
The industry would profit because significant numbers of travelers would wind up not redeeming the coupon because of inconvenience, and they probably wouldn’t care.
Edit: but this isn’t a deviation from supply and demand. This is a promotional coupon!

It’s like when you have a call option on a stock or a buy one get one free. It’s purely a business friendly idea.

Our shower’s in MA, and we currently have a one-way ticket purchased, with a the plan to drive back to NC. But an SUV/minivan runs about $1700 (including rental during the weekend up there). A moving van just for the trip alone is $900. Any advice?? Is there a cheaper way? Use the ticket elsewhere and drive both legs?
Thanks for the responses so far. first, we are very thankful for ANY gifts. our friends and family are beyond generous, too much in fact and we are an amazed and thankful couple. We didn’t foresee this issue though being first timers : ) and I don’t think my fiance’s mom did either. With the large wedding (to us anyway), many people DID foresee this and mailed gifts, and I didn’t know if it was tactful or not to ‘request’ how and where we want gifts. Still from the registry purchases, there will be quite a few things we will need to get back south, and I’m wondering how others have handled this in the past. It seems we should buy our return leg of the flight, and ship this stuff later. the wedding is also up in MA…we moved south after the engagement and everything was on deposit, creating our own little destination wedding wrinkle!!

We’re considering going to Tampa for our vacation (or somewhere else if anyone has suggestions). Probably Clearwater Beach. Can we easily get around without renting a car if we stay on the beach?

Trying to save money on our vacation.

I picked up a rental vehicle this morning while my car is in the shop for repairs from an accident. The employee from the rental company talked me into getting the supplemental insurance saying how it’ll make things easier in the event of an accident. Not realizing that my own auto insurance will work on a rental (it’s mandatory to have auto insurance in Massachusetts), I went ahead and purchased the CDW. Knowing what I now know, is it possible for me to opt-out of the rental agency’s protection plan and use my own for the remainder of the rental period? Even if I have to pay for today, I’ll do that. Beats having to pay for a whole week’s worth.

My car was past the H and was smoking so I took it in to one dealer. They told me that I needed a new head gasket blah blah and it was close to $2,000. They also told me my car was undriveable. I don’t have a $2,000 so I drove about 35 mins to another dealership which I have a $100 coupon. They ran a diagnostic test and couldn’t find anything wrong with it. So I showed them the paper from the other dealership, they test drove it and magically said the same thing that the previous shop said. The service manager knew I was mad, so they gave me a rental car I’ve had it for 10 days. Should I leave it alone since I have the rental car or should I ask for a discounted price or anything else? Thanks in advnace
I drive a 2001 Civic and it’s getting repaired not just sitting at the shop. I just have a problem w/ the 2nd shop not finding ANYTHING wrong w/ it if I didn’t speak up I would be stranded on the highway. I’m asking if it would be too much to ask for a discounted price in addition to the rental car that I already have.

Hello,

I expect to be doing a lot of travelling soon. I will visit about 20 destinations in North America, and I will need to rent a car at each one. Would you know of any big car rental franchise that would give me a big discount for renting cars from them for a total of 40 days, in 20 different towns?

Thanks!
